Managing conflict and minimising distress

Most psychologists agree that no personality type is better at managing conflict than others.

In the other hand, personality types have a predisposition to creating conflict and that is quite another subject.

Most people in the world and nearly all the personality types seek to minimise or avoid conflict because it is usually de-energising and distressing.

Managing conflict – Skills to learn for a “happy, balanced” life:

  • The instant you detect that conflict is developing, activate your alarm bells in your thinking and begin to focus more carefully on what is happening around you and what is happening emotionally within you
  • Take a deep breath or two and start to notice which emotions are welling up in you
  • Try not to take sides, stay in neutral and avoid adopting any position
  • Practice not reacting to what you are hearing, seeing and feeling
  • Focus on and try to focus on feelings, yours and theirs, rather than focusing on issues
  • Get used to win / win outcomes rather than coming out on top with a win / lose scenario
