Finding Purpose in Work

Nearly all of us, deep down, have desires to achieve and succeed.

Some much more than others.

Aligning those desires with our aspirations and purpose in life is, as Scott Peck wrote “the road less travelled.”

The road less travelled because, for a time, it must be travelled alone, the interior journey.

Our real journey in life is interior; It is a matter of growth, deepening, andof an ever greater surrender to the creative action of love and grace in our hearts. Never was it more necessary to respond to that action.

Thomas Merton.

Transcendent Purpose

In his Landmark research, published in his book Drive, (the surprising truth about what motivates us), Daniel Pink presents the evidence-based finding that:

“purpose is the desire to “make a contribution” and to create a “transcendent purpose.”

Daniel Pink says that joining a cause that is “bigger” than yourself drives the deepest motivation possible. Purpose in this context means waking up in the morning and going to work without grumbling. It also means that people with purpose are motivated to tackle even the most complex problems.

Peter Drucker wrote that all conscientious leaders and “knowledge workers” must struggle with five questions as they learn, grow and develop. Many of Danny Mcguigan’s clients have identified powerfully with Drucker question number 2:

What is my purpose in life? What am I here for?

Once grasped this can become a most disturbing even frightening question to consider. Yet, much like powerful and painful emotions, this question, through its capacity to disturb and waken us up, can eventually help us to crystallise our deepest desires and make sense of our purpose on earth.

Professor Jordan Peterson in a famous, notorious interview on Channel 4 with Cathy Numan focuses powerfully on this critical issue when he suggests that:

“We all have something to offer… People have within them the capacity to set the world straight and that doing so is where you find the meaning that sustains you in life.”
